Stephen Amritraj, Mustafa Ghouse pair up for Europe summer

Stephen Amritraj, the lesser-known Amritraj in contemporary tennis, is partnering Mustafa Ghouse in doubles events for the rest of the European summer.

While the Indian contingent (Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Sania Mirza and Sunitha Rao) start their Olympic campaign on August 11, Stephen and Mustafa will be pairing up at a challenger in Istanbul and then playing the Italy challengers in Manerbio and Como the following weeks.

"Musty and I are pretty much best friends and have a lot in common including good results together. We believe that the way to do it is to stick with one partner so we have given it this summer in Europe together," Amritraj told the Indian Tennis Blog.

Last month, he reached the doubles semifinals of Challenger tournaments at Rimini (with Mustafa Ghouse) and Medjugorje (with Matwe Middelkoop).

Getting good results in doubles means Stephen ends up missing singles qualifiers for the following week's events, thus forcing him to put his singles career on the backburner.

"I want to play singles when I can, but it isn't my top priority right now just because of goals and financial status," the 24-year-old said.

While cousin Prakash is currently India's highest-ranked tennis player, Stephen is ranked a lowly 1622 (as on July 28) in singles. But he's ranked 285 in doubles, 44 rungs short of a career-high he achieved in November 2007.

Last year, Stephen won four doubles trophies -- at the Kaohsiung challenger in Taiwan and three Futures events. At the very least, he'll have to match that performance to move into the Top 200.

It won't be easy, considering Stephen is yet to salvage his career from a clutch of injuries sustained over the years.

On February 16, 2003, while still a student at Duke University, Amritraj injured his knee while playing Mark Henderson. Rehabilitation after surgery forced him off the courts for three months.

Two years later, during his last match at college, Stephen tore ligaments in his knee. The result -- more time spent at the hospital.

"I have had three surgeries on my knees...and this has hampered my movement on slippery surfaces and has hurt in long, grinding matches," Amritraj said.

In May this year, just before the Carson challenger in the US, Stephen took a fall and broke it with his left hand, injuring his wrist.

"Basically played a whole month with just a one-handed chip backhand. I took a cortisone shot and went to Europe but after eight weeks, it's worn off so I have needed rest and therapy from time to time," he said.

That's also one of the reasons he won't be playing anywhere the coming week.

Amritraj, who grew up in the Californian city of Calabasas, is skipping both the challenger events in New Delhi, a decision he arrived at after changing his mind "at least four times each week".

"(I was) pretty much expecting to win both and nothing less, especially the second one because no one will stick around for doubles and my record last year against other Indians was something like 27-3."

After losing their opening match at the Graz challenger in Austria, Stephen and Mustafa opted to take a fortnight off before they rejoin the Tour in Istanbul.

Second straight title for Mahesh Bhupathi

Winning four matches in straight sets to win his second tournament on the trot, doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi showed he's still a force to contend with on the tennis court.

Bhupathi partnered Mark Knowles of the Bahamas to beat third-seeded Czechs Martin Damm and Pavel Vizner 7-5, 7-6(7) in the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships final on Saturday.

The victory got Bhupathi his 43rd career doubles crown and a share in the $89,500 prize money for the winning pair, who had also triumphed in Memphis last week.

Bhupathi is ranked 18 on the weekly ATP ranking list and is expected to move up when the new rankings are released on Monday. As a pair, Bhupathi and Knowles are currently placed second in the ATP Doubles Race.

"It's no secret. Obviously our games compliment each other. I enjoy playing on the advantage court. Both of us are pretty hungry to win. Me personally, I haven't had a full-time partner for about two years now so the opportunity to play with someone as good as Mark is exciting for me and I have been working pretty hard," Bhupathi said after the final.

"We've been friends for 15 years even though we haven't played together, everything matches and we're looking forward to carrying on the form," he said.

Bhupathi has won the Dubai title twice before - with Leander Paes (1998) and Fabrice Santoro (2004).

After an ominous 2008 debut in Sydney, where they bowed out in their opening match, Bhupathi and Knowles had reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in January and the quarterfinals at San Jose last month. They are now 13-3 for the year, having won their last eight matches in straight sets.

Mahesh Bhupathi triumphs in Memphis

Sydney was a nightmare, Melbourne was good, San Jose was okay but it was Memphis which proved lucky for Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles. The top seeds prevailed in the doubles event at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in the US city, grabbing their first title as a pair - that too without losing a set in four matches.

In the final, Bhupathi and Knowles proved too good for Thai twins Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana, triumphing 7-6(5), 6-2 in one hour and 16 minutes.

After an ominous 2008 debut in Sydney, where they bowed out in their opening match, Bhupathi and Knowles had reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in January and the quarterfinals at San Jose last month.

Sunday's victory added $23,500 to Bhupathi's wallet and saw him move one rung up to 18 on the weekly ATP ranking list. As a pair, Bhupathi and Knowles are now placed second in the ATP Doubles Race.

"We have started real well and (are) looking to continue with our form," the 33-year-old Indian told the Indian Tennis Blog.

Memphis was doubles title no. 42 in Bhupathi's career and the strapping south Indian now heads for the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships to compete with Knowles in a doubles draw that includes fellow Indians Leander Paes (with Paul Hanley) and Rohan Bopanna (with Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi).

Mumbai misses Indians at Kingfisher Open

It took four rain-hit days to complete first round matches at the Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open but when the roll call was taken, no Indians were left in the singles draw.

There's not going to be any consolation from doubles either. Mahesh Bhupathi, who claimed the inaugural title in 2006 with Mario Ancic, pulled out before his opening round doubles match with what appears to be a bad back.

Wildcard Rohan Bopanna, at 244 the highest ranked Indian in singles, was our best hope and he almost made it. But it was Frenchman Nicolas Devilder who prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) after saving three matchpoints.

NCAA champion Somdev Dev Varman, the other Indian wildcard in the draw, actually led 5-4 in the second set against Italian Fabio Fognini but had to settle for a 3-6, 6-7(8-10) loss at the $416,000 ATP event.

In a battle of qualifiers, Navdeep Singh couldn't find anything to break Toshihide Matsui's rhythm and lost 4-6, 6-7(6-8) to the Japanese player.

And lucky loser Purav Raja couldn't make much of a second chance, falling 4-6, 1-6 to Spain's Ivan Navarro.

Raja and Vivek Shokeen are playing doubles too, but as last-minute replacements for Bhupathi and France's Fabrice Santoro and no miracles are expected from them.

Last year's surprise finalists Bopanna and Ghouse also survive in the doubles event though with different partners - Bopanna with Pakistan's Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Ghouse with Karan Rastogi.

But the question on everybody's minds is the whereabouts of Leander Paes. The doubles specialist skipped the Mumbai event apparently because of his tiff with Bhupathi. But he and Britain's Jamie Murray are also missing in action at the ATP Bangkok event, where they were supposed to be playing this week.

Update: Ghouse and Rastogi lost to the British pair of James Auckland and Ross Hutchins 2-6, 6-3, 3-10 in a first round match on Centre Court that lasted an hour and 14 minutes.

Update 2: Bopanna and Qureshi have advanced to the doubles semifinals thanks to a walkover over Ivan Navarro of Spain and Sergio Roitman of Argentina. Roitman withdrew with an elbow injury in the quarterfinals.

Raja and Shokeen, the only other Indian pair still in the fray, lost their first round match in straight sets 3-6, 2-6 to the Serbian duo of Boris Pashanski and Victor Troicki.
Will Bopanna and Qureshi win the doubles title?
Yes - Bopanna was a finalist at ATP Mumbai last year
No - Luck favoured them so far, not any more
Can't say - all depends on who they play next

Paes crashes out of US Open men's doubles

Defending champions and fourth seeds Leander Paes and Martin Damm crashed out in the opening round of the men's doubles at the US Open.

The Indo-Czech duo were humbled 7-6(7-1),3-6,4-6 by unseeded Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut.

Compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi had better luck. He and Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic, seeded sixth here, got past Russia's Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets 6-3,7-5.

Bhupathi and Zimonjic, fresh from their victory at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, will now run into unseeded Americans Robert Kendrick and Sam Querrey.

UPDATE: CHAKVETADZE BEATS MIRZA 6-2, 6-3

Just hours after her second round win over Laura Granville, Sania Mirza was back on court to help American Bethanie Mattek defeat Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and France's Severine Bremond in the first round of the women's doubles. The number 16 seeds prevailed 6-2,6-2, making it a good day for the 20-year-old Indian.

Paes still had reason to stay back in New York. In an evening match, he partnered American Meghann Shaughnessy to beat Pavel Vizner of the Czech Republic and Janette Husarova of Slovakia in their mixed doubles opener. The unseeded pair won 7-5, 6-3, earning them a meeting with fifth seeded Czech duo Martin Damm and Kveta Peschke in the second round.

Leander Paes to pair up with Jamie Murray

Doubles specialist Leander Paes has asked British player Jamie Murray to pair up with him in at least two ATP tournaments following the US Open.

Paes and Martin Damm of the Czech Republic are the defending champions at the year's final Grand Slam in New York and are seeded fourth in the men's doubles.

Jamie, the older brother of Britain's number one Andy Murray, is an accomplished doubles player in his own right having won three tournaments this season in partnership with American Eric Butorac.

Murray will now pair up with world number eight Paes for ATP tournaments in Bangkok (September) and Tokyo (October).

"I have a talent for spotting something special in people," Paes was quoted as saying by The Times. "I spotted it a year ago when he was relatively unknown. It's that X-factor thing."
Paes should know. He and Mahesh Bhupathi were one of the best doubles pairs ever and even after their infamous split the Indian duo have won several titles in partnership with other players.

Interestingly, even Bhupathi has played with Murray this year, teaming up with the world no. 28 in the Cincinnati Masters where they lost to the world's best pair - Bob and Mike Bryan - in the second round.

Murray told The Times Paes had approached him several times.

"I didn't think about it too much because I was playing with Booty (Butorac) and we were playing well. He kept asking me and I thought, 'It's a great opportunity to try and play with someone like that.'"
But Murray's regular partner Butorac, who is playing with the 21-year-old Scot at the US Open, didn't sound too happy about the new pairing.

"Paes is 34. It might be fun to play a couple of tournaments with him, but in a year or two I'm probably going to be the better player," Butorac told the paper. "I hope Jamie realises that."

Bhupathi picks up Pilot Pen doubles title

In a morale-booster ahead of the US Open, Mahesh Bhupathi and Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic have won the men's doubles title at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven.

The top-seeded duo, who hadn't dropped a set all week, made short work of no. 4 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the final, beating the Polish pair in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The facile win gave Bhupathi his second doubles title this season and 41st overall. The title at New Haven comes 10 years after he first triumphed there in partnership with Leander Paes.

Earlier this month, the 33-year-old Indian had also struck gold at the Montreal Masters with Czech partner Pavel Vizner.

Interestingly, the Pilot Pen title was the first win for Bhupathi in partnership with Zimonjic. They had played together sporadically in the past - a total of four tournaments in seven years.

The Bangalore-based Bhupathi is currently ranked 20 on the ATP doubles list.

There could be more good news in store for India from the Pilot Pen tournament. Sania Mirza is partnering Italy's Mara Santangelo for a shot at the women's doubles title against top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
